Finnair implements new crew rostering system

Finnair successfully implemented the Carmen crew rostering system for its entire cabin crew. The main objective was to dramatically reduce lead-times and to improve planning efficiency.

Type 2 Solutions integrated the two systems ProCrew and Carmen by building a two-way interface which transfers production data from ProCrew to Carmen and vice-versa.

The technologies which are used to build the interface include: DB/2; SQL Server; Oracle; XML; XSL; XSD and Visual Basic.

The interface, dubbed “Ficaro” (FInnair CArmen ROstering) — as was the project — was built from scratch in 12 months, and put into production on May 20, 2003.

Finnair is one of the world’s longest-operating airlines, with a history dating back to 1923. It operates regular flights to over 60 destinations in Europe, the United States and Asia. In a transportation industry characterized by fluctuating fortunes, Finnair is today one of the few profitable carriers.
