What is Electronic Data Interchange?

Electronic Data Interchange, or EDI, is a standardised method that enables businesses to exchange commercial documents automatically with one another.

This includes orders, delivery notes and invoices. Instead of emails, PDFs or Excel files, this data is sent directly from system to system.

The result: no more manual processing, fewer errors, and a faster, more efficient process.

Why do organisations use EDI?

For many organisations, EDI is the standard for digital collaboration with customers, suppliers and logistics partners.

When a retailer sends an order, it is automatically received in the supplier’s system. Subsequently, shipping notifications and invoices are also exchanged digitally without any manual steps in between.

This saves time, prevents errors and makes it possible to largely automate the entire order process.

Within retail and logistics, EDI is often a requirement to collaborate with trading partners.
