Data Quality Management

If you google the term "data quality", you will get about 350 million matches. That is about 140 million more matches than for the term "data recovery". It would probably be jumping to conclusions to say that the quality of the data is more important than its availability, but it certainly indicates that data quality is a topic that preoccupies many people.

The importance of data quality

Data quality is not easily made visible and measurable. That is why organizations often become aware of the quality of their data (or lack thereof) when they are confronted with its side-effects. A common example is the case of undeliverable mail pieces. Once the returns have reached a certain level, efforts are undertaken to improve the quality of the data. However, such efforts are usually mere ad-hoc interventions and not coordinated efforts.

Over time, customers will keep moving, companies merging or going out of business.

Continuous improvement

Achieving data quality is a unceasing process, which requires a commitment to continuous improvement. In order to accomplish that continuous improvement, the people in charge of data quality need to have access to instruments that allow them to evaluate the data quality and to track the positive contribution they are making through their changes.

In other words, to structurally improve data quality, it is necessary to make it visible and measurable.

The Data Quality Monitor (DQM) is such an instrument, and helps you to tackle data quality issues. It provides that kind of insight that makes it possible to improve and maintain data quality. Online reporting functionality helps tracking progress over time, so that it can be integrated into your processes. Your organization works better with up-to-date, complete and correct data.

The DQM allows for:

• day-to-day progress tracking, neatly organized by topics (we call them Domains and Rules);
• an overview of all identified exceptions, optionally with an explanation of why an entry was tagged as exception;
• a historical overview of progress on global, Domain, or Rule level.

The performance history allows management to evaluate the progress made and to set specific targets.

Visible and measurable data quality raises your organization's awareness of the consequences of their actions on processes and systems.
