Type 2 is a concept used in business intelligence.

It designates a particular modeling technique for dimension tables used when changes to relevant values need to be captured over time.
When changes to these relevant values are detected during a batch load cycle, they are appended to their dimension with new surrogate key assignments.

This way, all previous states of the record are maintained, and the history of the record can be tracked.

This technique offers a solution for one of the weaknesses of relational databases, namely the fact that they "forget" historical information once
it is updated.
